A tender age

Campus ministryThis group of college students is bent on revolution.

A “revolution of tenderness,” in the words of Pope Francis.

St. Mary Campus Ministry in Oxford adopted the phrase as its theme for the academic year. The pope used the words last spring in a surprise video address presented to the annual TED Conference in Vancouver. “Tenderness is not weakness, it is fortitude,” he said.

As students at Miami University begin final exams week, the campus ministry already has met a range of tests, organizing local service and social justice projects, liturgical music, weekly Bible study groups, counseling, plus a variety of social and evangelical activities. Plans for next semester include an April retreat at the Spiritual Center of Maria Stein.

This is how the ministry describes its mission:

• Meet students where they are on their faith journey and help them to grow authentically in their love for God.

• Provide a sense of community for Miami students and welcome them into the greater St. Mary Church Parish community.

• Provide experiences that offer individuals the opportunity to have encounters with Christ and grow deeper in their faith.

Their website is here. The ministry is a beneficiary of a local rebate from One Faith, One Hope, One Love.  Other uses of St. Mary parish’s share of funds have been targeted to repair stained glass windows and replace the flat roofs on the Parish Center and rectory.
